Ethnographic filmmaking

The Bachelor course “Ethnographic Filmmaking” at the University of Vienna, first taught in the winter semester of 2023, focussed on the application of theoretical knowledge gained through the course “Introduction to Visual Anthropology”. Students created short ethnographic films in a setting of their choice in teams of three. For equipment, editing stations and technical support, students made use of the Vienna Visual Anthropology Lab. Support included technical workshops, in which students learnt how to work with camera and sound equipment in audio-visual research, as well as individual editing workshops and ongoing support on the film drafts.

The five resulting films were presented as part of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology’s Wednesday Seminar series on 24 April 2023 at the University of Vienna.
